ARCHITECTURE

The Plant at Kyle, AKA the Carraro Residence, or the Alamo Cement Plant House, is a vacation home by renowned architect Lake Flato. Located in Kyle, Texas just 30 miles from downtown Austin, you might get a hint of the property’s fascinating industrial past from its name.

Down a dirt road framed by large oak lies this award-winning steel and limestone architectural landmark. The plant is unobtrusively placed on 17 acres of Texas pastureland. This dramatic limestone and steel architectural landmark is quietly nestled on 17 acres just 30 miles from downtown Austin.

The plant is configured in three sections: the open garage shed where the pool is located, the covered corrugated central dog-run pavilion with laundry and utility areas, bath shower and bedroom, and the screened patio porch with a built-in limestone structure containing a kitchen, living and dining room on the ground floor under a bedroom and bath.

The Plant and its architect Ted Flato were featured on PBS series, This New House.

PEOPLE

The Plant at Kyle began life in the 1920s as a shed at the Alamo Cement Plant in San Antonio. The current owners decided to preserve its history and turn the building into a unique rental home and historical archive. Sleeping 10 in three bedrooms with 1 king bed, 3 queens and 2 bunk beds, the Plant at Kyle welcomes weddings, parties, family get togethers, corporate retreats and events.

The plant is set up for year-round indoor and outdoor living. Enjoy long walks taking in Texas ranch life, relax in the ‘world’s largest screened in porch’, or take advantage of good weather by cooling off in the outdoor pool.

Indoors, the stainless-steel kitchen is a wonderland for gourmands, adjacent you’ll find the sunny loft living and dining room with elm dining (or conference) table seating ten. A leather living room ensemble seats seven centered around a large limestone inglenook fireplace.

PLACE

The Plant at Kyle is an example of truly stunning architecture set in a dramatic hill country setting. Just off Interstate 35, the plant is well placed to access Mopac, Austin and San Antonio to enjoy what these great Texas cities have to offer.
