ARCHITECTURE
This is the perfect getaway sited directly on the Gunflint Lake in Michigan. This architect-designed cabin was created by VJAA for a family of Scandinavian heritage with an interest in Finnish design and exploring the local water sources by canoe.
Gunflint Lake Cabin was awarded the American Institute of Architects Minnesota Honor Award, in 2010.
This simple metal-clad cabin with ICF walls was developed with energy efficiency and fire resistance in mind. The interior is finished in standard tongue and groove knotty pine.
The orientation of the cabin is informed by the Scandinavian precedent of a Stabbur (a place for a bathhouse, grain drying shed, food preparation) - where the main level is raised above the winter snow.
The Scandinavian-inspired design leaves its mark on the interiors of the cabin, the living room features Scandinavian-designed chairs and vintage Swedish handmade area rugs. The sauna is as much an integral part of the cabin’s design as a place to unwind after a day on the Gunflint Lake or Upper Gunflint Trail.
PEOPLE
This cabin was conceived by the married couple owners as a haven for their family to escape to the dramatic landscapes of the upper Midwest.
The lower-level boat and ski/snowshoe storage area stocks all the all-weather outdoor activity equipment required to get active on the lake whatever the season. The storage area also provides easy access to the lake and lakefront trails.
As well as a canoe for traversing the lake, kayaks and lifejackets are provided to ensure safety at all times. There’s also an outdoor fire pit and grill to keep warm and refuel after energetic adventures.
Be warned there is no internet, cell phone reception, or TV at the cabin. It’s designed as the perfect getaway from all things digital.
PLACE
Gunflint Lake is a place to disconnect from technology. Get active on the woodland trail and spot some local wildlife, immerse yourself in watersports on the magnificent Gunflint Lake, curl up on the sofa after a long day next to the wood stove…
Board games are provided for cozy evenings indoors with friends and family and the sauna provides a welcome respite from the cold and snow in the winter months.
The raised nature of the cabin provides plenty of opportunities to admire the local cedar wood surrounding the property.
